With the support of generous community partners, donors, and volunteers, Habitat Bergen constructs quality homes, sells them to partner homebuyers at no profit, and provides affordable, zero-interest financing to make homeownership achievable.

how Habitat Bergen’s Repairs and rehabs program works

At Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County, our work extends beyond new home construction. We also provide repairs that strengthen community-serving buildings and support qualified homeowners with essential home improvements.

Our repair services focus on areas such as weatherization, home preservation, aging-in-place modifications, and disaster-related needs to help ensure that homes remain safe, accessible, and resilient.

Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County is launching a new round of its Safe at Home Repair Program to help eligible Bergen County homeowners address repair needs related to safety, accessibility, aging in place, or a physical disability.

This program is intended for Bergen County homeowners whose household includes someone who is age 55 or older or living with a physical disability. Repairs may focus on home preservation, weatherization, accessibility improvements, and critical repair needs. The assistance available will depend on program requirements, available funding, staffing, construction capacity, and the specific condition of the home.

Yes. The home must be your full-time, primary residence.

The current phase is focused on households with at least one resident who is age 55 or older and/or has a documented disability that affects mobility in the home.

Yes. If you are a Bergen County homeowner and at least one resident of the home has a documented disability that affects mobility or safe use of the home, you may apply even if the resident is under age 55.

At this time, Habitat Bergen is not partnering with renters or landlords through this pilot program. The applicant must be a homeowner and must live in the home as their primary residence

No. Safe at Home is not an emergency repair program. The application and review process takes time, and Habitat Bergen cannot provide immediate emergency service.

If your repair need is an immediate emergency or creates an urgent safety risk, you should contact a licensed professional, emergency service provider, or appropriate local agency.

The interest form includes examples of repair needs in several categories. These examples help Habitat Bergen understand community needs and determine what may fit within the program.

Cosmetic-only repairs are not the focus of this program. However, some repairs that may appear cosmetic, such as painting or patching, may be considered if they support home preservation, safety, accessibility, or weatherization.

Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County selects homeowners based on three main criteria: demonstrated need for affordable housing, the ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to partner through sweat equity and financial education.

We encourage applications from hardworking individuals and families ready to build a stable future.
